Tornado Safety Tips: How to Survive a Tornado

survive in wilderness

If you live in an area where tornadoes are common, there are things you can do to make sure you and your family can survive the storm. You can help your family and yourself prepare for any tornadoes that may come.

Find safe shelter locations and talk to your family about your emergency plans. This could include your house, work, school, or public building.

At home: Choose a spot in your house that is lower than the floor you are on, such as the basement or an interior room. As many walls as possible are placed between you, the outside, as well as any windows.

When you are in public places, find a place that is away from windows. If you are shopping in a large mall, store or other public area, locate an interior restroom or storage room that is away form windows and sit down as close as you can to the ground.

When a tornado is detected on weather radar, pull off the road and find shelter in a safe place. If you aren't able to, go into a ditch and/or other low-lying areas. Once there, lay down with your head covering your arms.

When you are outdoors: Avoid trees and cars; they could be blown over and hit you in the storm. Mobile homes can be particularly vulnerable to strong winds and should be evacuated if they are.

If you're in an office, factory, or other business, find the interior hallway on a lower level. This could be an inner hallway, a pantry or a bath.

High-rise apartment buildings: If you live in an apartment, pick a place in the hall on a lower level, such as a hallway or stairwell. If you have difficulty getting down to a lower floor, consider an interior hallway that does not have windows or a small closet.

Open doors and windows frames in offices are dangerous. If you're on the top floors of an apartment or tall office building, look for shelter in an interior hallway.

In a school or public building: You must stay in the interior hallway on the lower floor.

Avoid highway bridges and overpasses while driving. They can funnel wind and increase the chance of a tornado. If you find yourself in a tornado-related vehicle, get out of its path. Then, lie down on the side. Protect your face from lightning and flying debris by covering your head with arms.

How To

How to Build Shelters From Natural Materials for Emergencies

Shelter building is one the most crucial skills required in an emergency situation. There are two types. The temporary shelter is called a tent and the permanent shelter is called a house. Both shelters need basic tools, such as nails and hammers, saws and axes, picks, and shovels. But they do differ in the materials used. Temporary shelters are made from sticks, leaves, and grasses. Permanent shelters use metal, concrete bricks, stone, and other materials. The situation, climate, available resources and the best option will all determine which one is best.

Natural materials, such as bamboo and palm fronds, bark, reeds or vines, can be used in place of artificial ones. They have been used for centuries as temporary shelters. They are easy to construct and lightweight but lack durability. These structures provide protection from insects and extreme weather conditions. Permanent structures have better insulation properties, are stronger, and last longer. They require more work to construct.

In addition to being practical, these shelters should be aesthetically pleasing, safe, cost-effective, and environmentally friendly. Bamboo is a great choice due to its strength and lightness. However, it is difficult to work with and can be costly. They are cheap, but don't withstand high winds. Palm fronds are strong but easily torn and fragile. Bark is difficult to work, but provides excellent insulation and fire resistance. Grasses, while inexpensive, do not keep rainwater out. Vines are lightweight and flexible but may break if too tightly tied together. Although branches are strong and resilient, they can easily rot. Stone is durable and water-resistant, but it can be heavy and expensive. Concrete is tough to transport and difficult to install. Brick is sturdy, but it requires large spaces and is heavy. Wood is long-lasting but requires maintenance. Metal is difficult to use and expensive.

The material choice depends on many factors such as the location, budget, skills level, availability of tools, local regulations and climate. Bamboo is a popular choice in tropical areas where it can grow naturally. Bamboo grows quickly and requires no special tools. It is susceptible to wind and water damage, and it can be weak when it gets wet. It is tough and durable, but it takes a lot of effort to erect. Palms are tough and resilient but get dirty quickly. The bark is inexpensive, lightweight, and easy-to-cut. The bark is resistant to moisture and dust, but it can be easily damaged and brittle. Stones are strong, durable, and can withstand adverse weather conditions. Concrete is versatile and durable but requires power tools. Metal is strong but requires a lot of power tools. Wood is long-lasting and inexpensive. Steel is also durable but more costly.
